GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
Ensuring Healthy Lives and Promoting Well-being for All Residents of All Ages
Good Health and Well Being
Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being is an effort made by universities to provide health and well-being to the community, for example by providing free health care for employees and students or providing health insurance and conducting health awareness campaigns for the general public. Universities can also lead health and well-being initiatives across diverse populations; they are at the forefront of promoting universal health coverage, reducing preventable deaths, and improving public health through innovative research, comprehensive health services, and community outreach programs.

Over the past five years, Unusa has actively partnered with Community Health Centers (Puskesmas), District/City and Provincial Health Offices, as well as the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI), in implementing a wide range of public health programs, including the prevention of infectious diseases, nutrition improvement, maternal and child health, and the strengthening of community-based health services.
In addition to national partnerships, Unusa has also formed a strategic collaboration with UNICEF over the past five years, focusing on critical issues such as stunting prevention, nutrition education, food fortification, and adolescent and family health. Through this collaboration, Unusa serves as an academic and implementation partner in research-based and community empowerment initiatives across various regions in East Java.
Unusa also collaborates with both public and private hospitals to strengthen education and research practices in the health sector. These diverse collaborations reflect Unusa’s strong commitment to becoming a center of excellence in health innovation and sustainable development, contributing significantly to improving the overall health and well-being of the Indonesian population.

Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) actively implements various community health outreach programs as part of its commitment to improving public health and well-being. One of the key initiatives is the Community Service Program (KKN), which focuses on health education and stunting prevention. Through this program, students provide nutrition counseling, basic health checkups, and family assistance in adopting clean and healthy lifestyle practices. The KKN activities also actively involve local communities to ensure sustainable outcomes.
In addition, Unusa’s lecturers and students participate in various community service and inter-institutional collaboration activities, such as partnerships with PKM Wonokromo through clinic-based health services, Unusa’s Red Cross Volunteer Corps (KSR PMI Unusa) in health volunteerism and blood donation programs, as well as international collaboration with PCINU Taiwan to deliver health education for Indonesian migrant workers (PMI).
Through these initiatives, Unusa makes tangible contributions to improving public health, hygiene, and community welfare while instilling social awareness and professionalism in its students as future healthcare professionals.

Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) actively opens its campus sports facilities to be shared with the surrounding community as part of its commitment to promoting a healthy and inclusive lifestyle—aligned with the principles of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For example, the university’s volleyball court is not only used by Unusa students and staff but is also regularly utilized for social events and tournaments involving local communities. This demonstrates that campus sports facilities can serve as shared spaces where the university and the community engage in positive physical activities together.
In practice, access to Unusa’s sports facilities is provided free of charge for many campus and community events, including volleyball tournaments and sports training activities with local residents. By offering free access to various sports facilities, Unusa ensures that financial barriers do not prevent members of the campus or the community from participating actively. Through this approach, the university’s sports facilities have become friendly, open, and inclusive spaces—offering opportunities for exercise, social interaction, and the strengthening of community bonds.
Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) provides comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services for students through the Klinik Pratama Campus A. The clinic not only offers general medical care—such as treatment for gastritis, fever, or minor injuries—but also provides reproductive health consultations, including the management of menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea), which is often overlooked yet can significantly affect students’ learning activities.
All services at Klinik Pratama Campus A are free of charge for students, as the examination costs are covered by the university through the Directorate of Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, and Library. Each student is entitled to an annual health check-up quota that can be used at the clinic. In addition, the clinic provides health education materials on chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes to improve students’ health literacy.
By integrating clinical services, reproductive health consultations, and health education, Unusa ensures that students receive the information, guidance, and medical support they need to maintain their sexual and reproductive health safely and responsibly.
Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) provides mental health services for students through a counseling facility known as the Green Room. Launched in 2024, this program aims to support students’ holistic well-being—covering spiritual, academic, and psychological aspects.
The Green Room operates every Tuesday and Wednesday from 16:30 to 19:00 WIB and is located at House No. 6 (Student Center Area) on the Unusa campus. Students experiencing personal difficulties are encouraged to first consult with their academic advisor (PA). If the issue remains unresolved, they are referred to the University Student Guidance and Counseling Unit (ULBKM), and subsequently to the Green Room if further support is needed.
With an inclusive and empathetic approach, Unusa—through the Green Room—reaffirms its commitment to creating a campus environment that excels not only academically but also fosters emotional and psychological well-being, ensuring that every student feels heard, understood, and supported.

Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) demonstrates its strong commitment to creating a healthy campus environment by implementing a Smoke-Free Campus Policy (Kawasan Tanpa Rokok – KTR) across all campus areas. This policy is consistently enforced to protect the academic community from the dangers of cigarette smoke and to foster a cleaner, safer, and more comfortable learning atmosphere.
Through this initiative, Unusa strictly prohibits smoking activities in all campus facilities—including classrooms, public areas, and surrounding buildings. The university also actively conducts education and awareness campaigns on the dangers of smoking, targeting students, lecturers, and administrative staff.
This effort aligns with Unusa’s vision to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the goal of ensuring good health and well-being. By implementing the smoke-free campus policy, Unusa not only commits to the physical health of its academic community but also plays an active role in cultivating a culture of healthy living within higher education environments.
Unusa’s Commitment to a Smoke-Free University
Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) demonstrates its strong commitment to the well-being of all employees by providing full access to healthcare services through BPJS Kesehatan participation. Through this program, every staff member at Unusa can utilize a wide range of healthcare services—including mental health support—at healthcare facilities partnered with BPJS.
This policy ensures that all employees are covered by comprehensive health insurance, encompassing physical examinations, general medical treatment, as well as psychological and psychiatric consultations when needed. In this way, Unusa not only prioritizes the physical health of its staff but also gives serious attention to their mental health and emotional well-being.
This initiative reflects Unusa’s broader commitment to fostering a healthy, productive, and balanced work environment, supporting both the professional and personal lives of its employees.
