Reduced Inequalities

Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) has developed and implemented a range of policies and practices aimed at ensuring an inclusive, equitable, and accessible campus environment for all members of its community. These measures are in direct alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reducing Inequalities), demonstrating UII’s commitment to promoting equality and social inclusion. By fostering a campus culture that values diversity and supports marginalized groups, UII strives to create an environment where every individual, regardless of background or identity, has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and professionally.

One of the key aspects of Unusa commitment to reducing inequalities is its emphasis on non-discriminatory practices across all areas of university life, including admissions, recruitment, and academic progression. The university ensures that students and staff from diverse backgrounds—whether based on gender, race, disability, or socio-economic status—are provided with the same opportunities for success. Through various support systems, such as scholarships, mentorship programs, and tailored academic resources, UII works to level the playing field for students who may face additional barriers to education.

Unusa also provides targeted support for marginalized groups, ensuring that they have access to the necessary resources to overcome challenges and achieve their academic goals. This includes specialized services for students with disabilities, initiatives that promote gender equality, and programs designed to support students from low-income backgrounds. By offering these services, UII fosters a campus culture that values diversity and actively works to reduce the disparities that can hinder equal access to education.

In addition to promoting inclusivity within the university, UII also strives to create an environment where all voices are heard and respected. The university’s focus on reducing inequalities extends beyond the classroom, as it actively engages with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to contribute to campus life. Through these comprehensive measures, UII is helping to build a more inclusive society, one that supports social mobility, reduces disparities, and fosters greater equality for all.

Unusa Measures Against Discrimination

Unusa is committed to equitable access in its admissions processes, ensuring no discrimination based on socioeconomic background. Unusa also offers specific support for applicants with disabilities to ensure an accessible admissions process.

Unusa actively tracks and evaluates admissions and support for underrepresented groups, including low-income students, students with disabilities, and international students, aligning its processes to reduce inequalities and foster diversity within the student body.

Unusa takes deliberate actions to recruit students, faculty, and staff from underrepresented backgrounds. For example, the Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB) Scholarship provides educational opportunities for students from developing countries, promoting global inclusivity.

Unusa enforces robust policies on anti-discrimination and anti-harassment, as detailed in the University Regulations on Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence and employee codes of discipline, creating a respectful and inclusive campus climate.

Unusa Center for Human Rights Studies and its Institute for Human Rights Studies work closely with university administration to implement policies related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and human rights. This commitment, formalized through a longstanding partnership with the State Ministry for Human Rights, underscores UII’s dedication to fostering inclusivity.

Unusa provides counseling, mentoring, and peer support programs aimed at assisting students and staff from underrepresented groups, enhancing their experience and engagement within the university.

Unusa has taken significant steps to ensure campus accessibility, including designated disabled parking spacesaccessible toilets, and wheelchair ramps throughout campus buildings. Additionally, dedicated pedestrian paths are designed to support visually impaired individuals.

Unusa offers support services, including financial assistance and scholarships for students with disabilities, ensuring equitable opportunities for academic success.

The university’s policies ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to university facilities, with support for selecting appropriate programs and accommodations during the admission and learning process.

Unusa Rector’s Regulation Number 24 of 2021 outlines a comprehensive approach to supporting people with disabilities by ensuring accessible facilities, infrastructure, and resources. This policy includes specific provisions for accommodating the needs of students and staff with disabilities, aiming to eliminate barriers and promote inclusivity.
