Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) is strongly committed to alleviating poverty and promoting social justice through various programs that support both students and the wider community. Aware that economic hardship can hinder access to education, Unusa provides comprehensive assistance for students from low-income families, including scholarships, housing facilities, counseling services, and academic mentoring. These initiatives create a supportive learning environment that enables students to focus on their studies, develop their potential, and contribute meaningfully to community development.
Furthermore, Unusa actively empowers local communities through collaborations with government agencies, local organizations, and private sector partners. Programs such as entrepreneurship training, skills development, and small business mentoring are designed to foster economic independence and strengthen social resilience. Through research and policy advocacy, Unusa also contributes to the formulation of inclusive economic policies that prioritize community welfare. This commitment reflects Unusa’s role as an agent of change dedicated to building a self-reliant, equitable, and sustainable society.

Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) demonstrates its strong commitment to reducing poverty and ensuring equal access to education through its scholarship programs. These initiatives are designed to support students from low-income families in Indonesia, facilitated through both internal and external partnerships. This effort reflects Unusa’s belief that financial limitations should never become a barrier to pursuing higher education.
Internal scholarship funding is managed through Unusa’s Unit Pengelola Zakat (UPZ), sourced from zakat and infaq contributions. Scholarships may cover full or partial tuition depending on each student’s financial capacity. These programs are available across all faculties, reflecting Unusa’s inclusive approach to supporting students from diverse academic disciplines.
External scholarships are provided through partnerships with both governmental and non-governmental institutions. As a result, more than 20% of Unusa’s total student population receives scholarship support each year. To date, external scholarship providers have included the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS), as well as various private companies.
Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty), the Beasiswa Duafa program aims to empower students from underprivileged backgrounds through education. By providing access to quality higher education, the program creates opportunities for socioeconomic advancement and generates positive ripple effects for families and communities. This initiative reinforces Unusa’s role as a catalyst for social mobility and poverty alleviation through educational empowerment.

Unit Pengelola Zakat ( UPZ ) Scholarship Assistance
Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) supports students from low-income families in completing their academic studies by providing scholarships, self-development facilities, and counseling services. This effort focuses not only on financial assistance but also encompasses comprehensive academic and personal support to help students overcome various challenges during their studies. This holistic approach reflects Unusa’s dedication to creating an inclusive and empowering educational environment.
In its implementation, students from low-income families not only receive scholarships but also gain access to various facilities for both soft-skill and hard-skill development. In addition, there are programs that connect students with additional resources such as the Student Guidance and Counseling Center. This center plays a crucial role as a support system that provides professional counseling services and tailored assistance to address various challenges, including financial pressures, academic difficulties, and mental health issues.
By integrating financial aid with comprehensive support services, Unusa creates a safety net for students from underprivileged backgrounds, helping them overcome barriers to completing their education. Professional counselors and psychologists at Unusa work closely with students to identify and address specific issues, empowering them to stay focused and achieve their academic goals. This collaborative approach underscores Unusa’s commitment to equitable education and long-term student success.

To support students from low-income families, in addition to providing guidance throughout their studies, Unusa also offers various facilities to foster self-development. This initiative addresses the challenges faced by students in completing their studies at Unusa. The provided facilities include dormitories for students from low-income families and tablet assistance as learning tools to support the academic process on campus.
Dormitory facilities for students are allocated through a selection process to ensure the aid reaches the right recipients. In addition, dormitory facilities are also provided for international students studying at Unusa. With these supporting facilities, students feel safe and comfortable throughout their study period at Unusa.
To enhance students’ engagement in technology-based learning, Unusa also provides tablets in collaboration with Samsung as the device partner and Indosat as the internet provider. This initiative demonstrates Unusa’s strong commitment to supporting the learning process for students from low-income families, particularly those who may not otherwise have access to such resources.

Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (Unusa) is actively engaged in entrepreneurship development both internally and externally through its business units. The target of this program includes start-up entrepreneurs and local business owners.
Unusa lecturers who are part of the entrepreneurship community provide annual mentoring to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through community service and research grant programs. In addition, students also participate in the mentoring process as part of their experiential learning outside the classroom.
Furthermore, through the Unusa Halal Center Unit, the university conducts outreach, guidance, training, and mentoring for MSMEs to help them obtain halal certification—one of the essential requirements for business establishment in Indonesia.
