Life Below Water

SDG 14 aims to protect and sustainably manage marine and coastal ecosystems, which are sources of food, climate regulators, and habitats for a wide variety of biodiversity. Broadly speaking, SDG 14 indicators cover marine ecosystem health, sustainable fisheries management, conservation area protection, international policies, and the welfare of small-scale fishermen. This SDG, which focuses on marine ecosystems, promotes sustainable fisheries management so that human food needs are met without damaging ecosystems.
Each university with a faculty or related study program, such as fisheries, marine biology, or environmental technology, can play an active role in developing solutions to plastic pollution, coral reef conservation, and environmentally friendly fishing practices. Campuses can also encourage students to participate in socio-ecological activities, such as coastal clean-up programs or empowering small-scale fishers through mentoring.
